In addition to photography I also work as a registered nurse specializing in diabetes education and oncology. At times my professions merge. The photographs in this album were taken during volunteer medical trips to Haiti while assisting the development of diabetes services and working in cholera clinics during the 2010 outbreak.
Materially Haitians have much less than we have become accustomed to in the USA, but they are rich in spirit often spontaneously breaking into song in their outdoor markets or waiting in a medical clinic. I find the Haitian people and their culture help me better appreciate essential material-less elements of life. They are, however, very vulnerable when natural or man made disasters strike.
With the country's literacy rate of 53 per cent I found photographing local foods very helpful for providing diet instruction for diabetes. Images were used to show which foods had the most and least effect on blood sugar and appropriate food portions. The earliest languages used pictographs. I find it intriguing to see this aspect of language enhanced as modern technology increases the immediacy of the images we create.
